If you’re a designer, chances are you already work a lot from home. But during the current lock-down, you may find yourself with more free time than you did before. So why not make the move you’ve been postponing for quite some time, by taking a few simple steps towards the next level in your career. Here are some ideas you can work on if you feel like there’s room for improvement in your professional life.

Work on your online presence

Everyone is online RIGHT NOW, this is your time to shine! Even if it simply means that you’re starting by reminding your personal circle of what you do and how good you are at it! You can post your work online, write about what you do, and show people what inspires you.

If you feel ready for a bigger step, you should start thinking about ways to promote your work by getting inspiration from other designers. Learn more about social media marketing strategies by doing some research. Or better yet, ask a professional, as it can save you a lot of time and effort.

Work on your portfolio: Online or not.

A designer’s portfolio is the key to that long wanted project. Make sure you are proud of what you’re showing in there. You also want to show projects that attract the right audience. For example, if you like minimal contemporary designs, don’t put a traditional rustic project you took just for the money. Focus on what you want in your future projects and the things that you enjoy doing the most.

However, if you feel like you don’t have much left to show when you remove the projects that don’t speak to you, you can always create new ones just for the sake of example.

Freelancing websites

Freelancing websites might open up international opportunities and they are a great way to add some new locations to your portfolio. You can find some great websites that you can explore like Fiverr, Upwork, Freelancer, Peopleperhour and a lot more. These projects may help you jump into the next level in your career by adding experience and new perspectives.

Do other activities

Not feeling creative lately? All designers experience a lack of inspiration at a certain point in their careers. It is absolutely normal, and no one should feel incompetent because of it. The secret is to engage in other activities, and I promise your creative mind will find a way back to design!

In other words, activities like reading, gardening, dancing, drawing, watching movies or documentaries can take your mind off the technicalities in your job and help you envision different ways to innovate in your own field.

Sleep and self-care

Well, you might as well enjoy some relaxation because you don’t get that chance often. Whatever self-care means to you, do the things that make you happy and learn how to find the right balance in your life.
